color changes under different lights and has strong red fluorescence--it basically looks a bit different every time you look at it

While it is used in a variety of infrared laser systems it is surprisingly hard to actually get as industrial scrap--this is because the material is usually annealed immediately after growth

the purity required is so high that titanium sapphire doesn't get grown with cheaper lab methods either - flame fusion setups have a hard time obtaining the extreme chemical purity needed for pink titanium sapphire
